I was watching this area last night and going over that last year in activity to see how abnormal it really was since the Philippine plate is squeezed in between the Eurasian plate and the Pacific Plate, but the situation is more complex than that. The Philippine Islands are surrounded by complex plate boundaries, and the Philippines Plate rather consists of several micro-plates – squeezed in between two convergent plate margins. So you would assume this type of activity may not be out of a normal. But it is. Over the last year there has been a total of 44 earthquakes over the 5.o magnitude recorded it the region. January 2012 had 8 and a total of 87 "tremors".
Last night there were 10 5.0 up ( most around 6.0 ) in this area. The big one so far is this 6.7 finally reported world wide due to the loss of life.
Earthquakes in the Philippines we preceded by a 7.1 and many many large aftershocks in Vanuatu in the same map area and region list that occurred 2/2/2012. ( start of chain )
Some watching this are are now looking for another more stronger quake in the area or a chain reaction following fault lines to the north and around the "ring of fire" . Being able to watch these things happen is an amazing thing and this will cause learning opportunities for effect in the future.
